Kuala Lumpur Culture

Welcome to Kuala Lumpur, urban empire extraordinaire. This was by far the most developed and affluent city we visited on our Southeast Asia travels.  As such, we were determined to get a taste of what this foreign metropolis had to offer.  After getting settled in our tiny and somewhat smelly room, we set out to explore the big city. We tried our palates at a hawker stand of Kaitlin's choice, which was far better than the rat-infested one Nick would choose one day hence.

On our walking tour, we spotted one of the Petronas Towers -- an architectural landmark of KL.

No trip to KL would be complete without visiting some malls.  We didn't end up buy anything,  (unless you count a pair of cheap earrings to ensure Kaitlin's piercings didn't close up), but the plazas were still fun to walk around.

Some were old and dilapidated...

...some were fancy-shmancy, electronics central...

...while some were outright hedonistic heaven!

Our accommodation was conveniently located nearby Petaling street in Chinatown.  Sounds suspiciously similar to "peddling" which is exactly what goes on here.  Tee shirts, sunglasses, bongs (I mean, water pipes?)--you name it, they sell it.

After an attempt to get our Vietnam visas (way too expensive here!), we stumbled upon this arts and crafts place, where they offered do-it-yourself batik! Someone is happy about this!

Nick's masterpiece, complete!

Welcome to the...

After visiting the butterfly farm in Penang, it seemed perfectly logical that we ought to visit the Aviary in KL.  Here a wide diversity of birds are kept, many of which have free reign in the huge park-- a really cool concept.  This also means we need to watch out for shit bombs, which we miraculously avoided.

As we departed the aviary, this angry monkey screamed at us!  It was probably defending its pack, which had several young ones clinging to mommy's belly.

After indulging in the refined delights of Kuala Lumpur, we were ready to get back onto the less glamorous backpacker trail. We stopped for one last taste of hedonism in the KL international airport,  where we flavored some "white coffee" that is popular in Malaysia.

Our next stop was Siem Reap, Cambodia -- a quick flight away, where a world wonder did stand in waiting to sate the hungers of our gawking tourist eyes.
